venetian lullaby book

Venetian Lullaby

Venetian Lullaby takes place in the canals of Venice. In this book, we see a father gently singing a lullaby to his baby as the mother guides them on the gondola. The rhyming prose is soothing as the boat bobs up and down the canal. The illustrations pair perfectly with the verse and capture the style of Venetian imagery. We see the masks, curvy bridges, and cobblestone streets slowly fade away to clouds and magical dreams. I love how the book features, as the author states, “one of the only female gondoliers.” I appreciate the change in narrative from the norm. This is played into more with the father being the one to cradle and hold the baby.

Venetian Lullaby is a beautiful take on the traditional lullaby. If only we could all put our children to sleep in such an exotic atmosphere!

To pair with the book we make our own gondola out of aluminum foil.
